How can I make money with MySpace? Or rather, should you even bother with developing MySpace as another source of online income? As a social network that sees very heavy daily visitor traffic from millions of users, MySpace has been the target of aspiring entrepreneurs, internet marketers and webmasters.
As everyone knows, traffic of all sorts can be transformed into profit through various monetization methods. MySpace is no exception.
A large number of webmasters, marketers and businesses are trying to promote their products on websites on MySpace and the effects can be seen in the large amount of spammy advertisements across the MySpace network.
It would not be inaccurate to say that making money on MySpace is incrementally more difficult now because of market saturation, due to the entry of so many businesses or individuals who are trying to get a piece of the lucrative MySpace pie.
Personally, I’ve always been interested in MySpace marketing and MySpace related websites because of the sheer market size that MySpace commands.
I’m also one of those optimistic enough to believe that it’s still possible to make money with MySpace. In my opinion, one just needs to be skilled at selecting the right monetization method and knowledgeable about the different tactics you can use to market your product or business.
MySpace and Commercial Activity
It is important to know that you can’t promote affiliate programs or commercial services openly on MySpace since its against their Terms of Agreement. This is something to keep in mind before you begin any type of marketing or promotional method.
Point 5 on MySpace’s TOS talks about Non-Commercial Use by Members:
The MySpace Services are for the personal use of Members only and may not be used in connection with any commercial endeavors except those that are specifically endorsed or approved by MySpace.com.
Illegal and/or unauthorized use of the MySpace Services, including collecting usernames and/or email addresses of Members by electronic or other means for the purpose of sending unsolicited email or unauthorized framing of or linking to the MySpace Website is prohibited.
Commercial advertisements, affiliate links, and other forms of solicitation may be removed from Member profiles without notice and may result in termination of Membership privileges. Appropriate legal action will be taken for any illegal or unauthorized use of the MySpace Services.
What this actually means for MySpace marketers is that aggressive and blatant advertising will not work. Everything that you do will have to be somewhat under the radar, especially when it comes to selling products or services.
10 Ways to Make Money from MySpace
I’ve dug around the web and haven’t really found any useful guide to making money with MySpace and so I’ve decided to come up with my own list of methods you can use to earn some extra money from MySpace.
Most of the items on this list came from several webmaster friends who earned a consistent income through the funneling of MySpace traffic to highly relevant websites with various monetization options.
Depending on your personal ethics, some of the methods on the list may not be methods that you will want to pursue. That’s perfectly fine. My aim was just to record down a list of the ways that one can possibly use to make money through MySpace.
Here is the list in full:
1. Bulletin-based Advertising. Mastering this is the first and most fundamental step towards making money with MySpace. Add as many friends as possible (either manually or through automated software) and learn to send out bulletins or comments which drive traffic towards your money-making sites.
Depends on how targeted or aggressive your broadcasting, these methods can be regarded by MySpace and other users as spam.
2. Use Affiliate programs. Direct Myspace traffic to your website which contains your affiliate links or product feeds. I suggest going for Cost Per Action programs which only require the visitor to submit his or her email address or sign up for a free account with any website.
Dating network, free X360 offers or ringtones would generally do well although some affiliate networks may not be too pleased if you primarily get all your affiliate traffic from MySpace alone. Mixing MySpace into your overall affiliate marketing strategy will be more balanced and useful.
3. Start a MySpace Resource site. Your aim is to make money through Adsense and other advertising by driving MySpace traffic to your site.
The main attraction of your site will be the availability of free MySpace resources such as templates, codes, graphics and survey generators etc. Note however, that many webmasters have reported poor click values for MySpace resource sites because of the low paying ads.
4. Create dozens of accounts everyday and sell them to webmasters which are looking to promote their website on MySpace. There is actually demand for multiple Myspace accounts in webmaster and affiliate marketing forums.
5. Offer Advertising Space for webmasters and businesses. This will only work if you have a large number of friends on your MySpace accounts. You can probably charge webmasters a fee for putting up a link to their website or business.
This is usually done through bulletin-style notices that go out to multiple members or mass commenting. Think of it as something similar to an email list.
6. Partner with independent musicians and bands to reach out to their fan base. This will allow you to get some sales for your products if they are highly relevant. I suppose that T-shirts and fashion accessories will do well when they receive personal recommendations from musicians.
7. Create and Sell Myspace scripts or templates. You can either set up your own website to sell these templates or sell them to MySpace Resource websites, who are always looking for new material. Keeping the price competitive is an important factor here.
8. Build a MySpace website around your business. For example, if you are selling shoes, you could build a MySpace page which highlights a specific section of your website (E.G. sports sneakers, vintage shoes) which would appeal to the MySpace market. This will usually get some visitors to your website and may lead to actual sales.
9. Start a Proxy site. Proxies are websites, which allow users to surf websites which may be banned in a specific locality. They are usually monetized by Adsense or other types of contextual based advertising.
Proxies are popular with the MySpace crowd because it allows them to bypass web filters that are set up by the schools or businesses to block Myspace websites. There are a lot of proxies out there and competition for MySpace and other internet users is quite strong.
I suggest getting into the Proxy business only if you really know how to promote your proxy effectively on both MySpace and the search engines.
10. Use MySpace Groups for targeted marketing. Visit the category relevant to your business and carefully drop targeted links to your website, which should contain useful content alongside affiliate programs/Adsense.
A List of MySpace-friendly Websites and Affiliate Programs
Like any other type of market, picking a highly relevant affiliate program or website and promoting it through MySpace is absolutely vital for monetary success.
The MySpace market is made up of mostly teenagers, so choosing products or websites which appeal to their interests would be very useful indeed.
Here is a list of some websites and affiliate programs which will work well with the MySpace crowd.
* Humor and Entertainment websites
* Social Video websites
* Free music and games download sites
* Wallpaper download websites
* MySpace Resource websites
* Free Ringtone download websites/affiliate programs
* Free software/application download websites
* Music related websites
* Dating/Social networking websites
* Online clothing/T-Shirts websites and affiliate programs
Just to point out that I’ve not included any specific MySpace scripts or tools which can automate the profile building or marketing process because there are just far too many of them out there.
If there’s enough interest, I might cover these scripts and the overall marketing/traffic directing process in a separate post. Leave a comment and let me know what you think.

BloggerCon - Making Money with Your Blog
BloggerCon - Making Money with Your Blog
Doc Searls has an interesting post on making money with blogs in preparation for a session on the topic at the next Blogger Con. He asks a lot of thought provoking questions and then puts forward an interesting case…
‘As you can see, I have a position here. I believe it’s far more important (and interesting) to make money because of our blogs, rather than with them; just as we make money because we have phones rather than with our phones.
There are exceptions. Some of us make money by selling on the phone. If that’s you, think about what trying to sell over your blog (instead of the phone) would do to your relationships with readers.
Of course, lots of people use advertising to defray the costs of blogging. And, to be frank, I really don’t care much if you have advertising on your blog, or if you make money that way. If that makes you happy, or makes you money, fine. I expect we’ll spend some time comparing various advertising options. But let’s also ask, How interesting is that, once you’re past describing whatever it takes to get going with Adsense or Blogads? It’s cool that they provide a service and an income stream. But I’d like to see us budget time for each of the potential topics we can cover.’

How do bloggers make money from blogs?
How do bloggers make money from blogs?
I’ve been reflecting this week about the amazing diversity of opportunities that are opening up for bloggers to make money from blogs.
I’ve long advised that bloggers seeking to make money from blogging spread their interests across multiple revenue streams so as not to put all their eggs in one basket.
The wonderful thing is that this is becoming easier and easier to do 2005 has seen many options opening up. I thought I’d take a look at some of the methods that bloggers are currently using to make money through blogs.
Income Streams for Bloggers - How they Make Money from Blogs
Advertising Programs - Perhaps the most obvious changes in the past few months have been with the addition of a variety of viable advertising options for bloggers. The most common way bloggers seem to earn money online is via the contextual ad program from Google - Adsense. Another two popular ones with many is BlogAds. A more recent addition that many are using successfully are Chitika’s eMiniMalls and CrispAds, Text Link Ads.
Adgenta, Azoogle Ads, Intelli Txt, Peak Click, DoubleClickTribal Fusion, Adbrite, Clicksor, Industry Brains, AdHearUs, Kanoodle, AVN, Pheedo, Adknowledge, YesAdvertising, RevenuePilotTextAds, SearchFeed, Target Point, Bidvertiser, Fastclick Value Click and OneMonkey (to name just some of the options - I’m sure I’ve forgotten some) and there is a smorgasbord of options. Of course there is more to come with MSN Adcenter and YPN both in beta testing and with a variety of other advertising system currently in development (so I hear).
RSS Advertising - The past 12 months have seen some advances in RSS Advertising also. I’m yet to hear of any bloggers making big money through it to this point - but as improvements are made to the ad programs exploring this I’m sure we’ll start to see examples of it being profitable.
Sponsorship - In addition to the array of advertising programs that are available to join there is a growing awareness in the business of the value and opportunity that exists for them to advertise directly on blogs. I’m hearing more and more examples of this and have been fortunately to have a couple of ad campaigns of my own in the past month - one with Adobe a couple of weeks ago and another just completed with Ricoh for a new digicam over at my Digital Camera Blog. These are not isolated cases - as I say I know of many blogs exploring sponsorship with advertisers at present and suspect we’ll see more of it in the year ahead. Sponsorship is also happening on a post by post basis with some bloggers being paid to write on certain topics by companies - either in one off or a regular fashion - and they are able to make big money from their blogs doing so.
Affiliate Programs - There are larger affiliate programs like Amazon, Linkshare, Clickbank and Commission Junction but also literally thousands of others from the large to the very small.
Digital Assets - Increasing numbers of bloggers have been developing other digital assets to support and add revenue streams to their blogs. By this I mean that I’m increasingly seeing e-books, courses and tele-seminars being run by bloggers. My recent foray into this with the first series of the six figure blogging course that Andy and I ran a few weeks ago and have just released the study version of. This type of activity will only increase in future - in fact this week I’ve seen numerous examples of bloggers running courses.
Blog Network Opportunities - with the rise in popularity of Blog Networks - bloggers are also being presented with more places to earn an income from their blogging - by writing for and with others. While it might be difficult to get a writing gig with one of the bigger networks - there are plenty who are always asking for new bloggers to join and who are willing to pay bloggers using a variety of payment models. While there are distinct advantages of blogging for yourself - blogging for an established network who will handle a lot of the set up/promotion/admin/SEO etc has it’s advantages also. More and more bloggers are combining writing for themselves on their own blogs with taking on blog network blogs as additional income streams.
Business Blog Writing Opportunities - as blogging has risen in it’s profile as a medium more and more businesses are starting blogs. Many of these companies have internal staff take on blogging duties - but an increasing number of them are hiring specialist bloggers to come on and run their blogs. I know of a number of bloggers who in the past month or two have been approached for such paid work. Check out Bloggers for Hire if you’re looking for this type of work.
Non Blogging Writing Opportunities - Also becoming more common are bloggers being hired to write in non blogging mediums. Manolo’s recent coup of a column in the Washington Post is just one example of this as bloggers are increasingly being approached to write for newspapers, magazines and other non blog websites. Along side this is the rise of bloggers as published book authors - this is to the extent that one blogger I spoke with this week complained to me that they were one of the few bloggers than they knew who didn’t have a book deal!
Donations - Tip Jars and donation buttons have been a part of blogging for years now but this last year saw a number of bloggers go full time after fundraising drives. Perhaps the most high profile of these was Jason Kottke of kottke.org who through the generosity of his readership was able to quit his job and become a full time blogger.
Flipping Blogs - Also more common in 2005 was the practice of ‘Blog Flipping’ - or selling of blogs. This has happened both on an individual blog level (I can think of about 20 blogs that sold this year) but also on a network level (the most obvious of these being the 8 figure sale of Weblogs Inc to AOL).
Merchandising - My recent attempt to sell ProBlogger.net T-shirts wasn’t a raging success, but it is an example of how an increasing number of bloggers are attempting to make a few extra dollars from their blogs by selling branded products through programs like Cafepress (although I have to say they’ve lost one of my own orders and are being quite unresponsive to my requests to follow it up at present). While I didn’t have a lot of success with merchandising - quite a few larger blogs are seeing significant sales - especially blogs with a cult following. I’m not at liberty to discuss details - but I know of one largish blog which will see sales over $20,000 in merchandise for the calendar year of 2005.
Consulting and Speaking - While it has been popular for established consultants to add blogs to their businesses we’re also starting to see bloggers with no consulting background able to make money by charging readers for their time in consulting scenarios BECAUSE of the profile that their blogs have built them. Blogging has the ability to establish people as experts on niche topics and we all know the value of being perceived as an expert. I spoke to one blogger last month who charges himself out at over $200 an hour for speaking and consulting work - his area of expertise was something that he knew little about 18 months ago - but through his blog he’s become a leader in his field and a minor celebrity in his industry.
As time rolls on there are more and more ways that bloggers make money from their blogs opening up. Feel free to suggest your own ideas and experiences in comments below.

adsense
AdSense is an ad serving program run by Google. Website owners can enroll in this program to enable text, image and, more recently, video advertisements on their sites. These ads are administered by Google and generate revenue on either a per-click or per-thousand-impressions basis. Google is also currently beta-testing a cost-per-action based service.
Google utilizes its search technology to serve ads based on website content, the user's geographical location, and other factors. Those wanting to advertise with Google's targeted ad system may sign up through AdWords. AdSense has become a popular method of placing advertising on a website because the ads are less intrusive than most banners, and the content of the ads is often relevant to the website.
It currently uses JavaScript code to incorporate the advertisements into a participating site. If it is included on a site which has not yet been crawled by the Mediabot, it will temporarily display advertisements for charitable causes known as public service announcements (PSAs). (Note that the Mediabot is a separate crawler from the Googlebot that maintains Google's search index.)
Many sites use AdSense to monetize their content and some webmasters work hard to maximize their own AdSense income. They do this in three ways:
1. They use a wide range of traffic generating techniques including but not limited to online advertising.
2. They build valuable content on their sites which attracts AdSense ads which pay out the most when they get clicked.
3. They use copy on their websites that encourage clicks on ads. Note that Google prohibits people from using phrases like "Click on my AdSense ads" to increase click rates. Phrases accepted are "Sponsored Links" and "Advertisements".
The source of all AdSense income is the AdWords program which in turn has a complex pricing model based on a Vickrey second price auction, in that it commands an advertiser to submit a sealed bid (not observable by competitors). Additionally, for any given click received, advertisers only pay one bid increment above the second-highest bid.

Affiliate Marketing with Credit Card Deposit
Affiliate Marketing with Credit Card Deposit
In a world powered by plastic, it can be difficult selecting the best credit card for the job. Some give you reward miles, others have a low acceptance threshold, others still may provide you with unlimited spending. If the concept behind CreditCardDeposit.com sounds familiar, that’s because I did a ReviewMe of a very similar site earlier this month. Is this one any better? In some ways, yes it is.
A Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing
Much like that other credit card site, CreditCardDeposit.com outlines a wide range of different credit cards spanning all sorts of genres and banks. They’re organized by a variety of categories like gas credit cards, student credit cards, and even poor credit credit cards. And just like before, each and every “apply now” link is an affiliate link, making money for the people behind CreditCardDeposit.com.
There are a few key differences, however, that set this money making scheme apart. For starters, the main page actually has “real” content with a 200-word introduction into what the website is all about. It starts with a brief commentary about how credit cards are obligatory in today’s society — renting a car, getting a hotel room, making online purchases, etc. — and then it goes to tell you how you can search for just the right card to suit your needs. It almost sounds noble, but we all know that this site is clearly a wolf in sheep’s clothing. They’re just after the affiliate dollars, after all.
Someone Needs a Freelance Writer
So, while it’s a good thing that the people behind Credit Card Deposit went through the trouble of creating some semi-quality content that might actually be useful — they even created an About Us page, though it really says nothing about the actual people behind the site — the content isn’t written all that well. Maybe I’m just a little nit-picky, but when I started making my way around the website, I discovered a significant amount of grammar and spelling mistakes.
ccd-header.jpg
Let’s leave style points aside for just a moment. The tagline in the main banner even has a simple capitalization error. It reads “Dozens of Credit Card Applications, complete Online Credit Resource Center.” An elementary school student can tell you that the word “complete” in that statement should be capitalized. Basic things like this really take away from the otherwise professional appearnace of Credit Card Deposit.
On the main page, there are a few things that need to be corrected or rewritten. In the first paragraph, it says that “you can always print an online order form and mail your order with a check or money.” That’s just poorly worded. By switching the ending to “with cash or a check”, the statement would flow a little better. There’s also punctuation mistakes: “Not everyone however can qualify for credit.” Am I a grammar nazi? I don’t think so. I don’t have too much of an issue when John goofs on this blog, but the credit card site should portray a certain level of professionalism. And spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors just won’t do.
ccd-business.jpg
That’s a Lot of Credit
Browsing through the dozens of different credit cards is pretty easy, especially with the convenient categories listed on the side. You can also sift through the selection based on the issuing bank. For each credit card entry, there are a series of bullet points that highlight the key features, and then there is a summary at the bottom that outline the introductory APR, regular APR, annual fee, and so on. But wait, there’s more.
When you click through on just about every credit card on the site, you are given a nice long review of what the card is all about. The American Express SimplyCash Business Card, for example, got an overall rating of 4/5 and a benefit rating of 5/5. The review goes on to describe the most and least attractive features, as well as any additional perks the card may have. This is a lot of information, and it might actually be useful for someone shopping for a new credit card.
All in all, I can say that I am reasonably pleased with what CreditCardDeposit.com has accomplished with the simple design, level of content, and variety of cards. To improve the professionalism of the site, though, I’d advise them to revise the actual written content.

Evil Top Commentators Trick For Traffic & SEO
April 28th, 2007 by John Chow
To encourage comments, many Wordpress blogs use a Plugin call Show Top Commentators. This Plugin encourages feedback and discussion by rewarding readers for making comments. My Top Commentators are displayed on the right sidebar (under Recent Posts) along with the number of comments made in the past five days. The commentator names links back to their sites. Unlike links in the comments, the links on the Top Commentators are full links without a nofollow tag. That means the commentators gets loved by Google as well as traffic.
Looking at my Top Commentators lists, I can see that, from a SEO standpoint, three commentators are doing it right and the rest are doing it wrong. Getting a link on the Top Commentators list offers more SEO benefit than traffic benefits. It’s the same as buying a text link. The link sends you traffic but its main purpose to help you improve your Google ranking. Knowing this to be the case, then the anchor text for the top commentator link should be anything but your name (unless your name is very descriptive).
If you’re going to go after the top commentators position on a bunch of blogs, then it’s to your advantage to link back to your blog with something other than your name or blog name. Webmaster Labor is doing this correctly with Cheap Custom Content and Article Checker. Yes, he holds two spots on the Top Commentators list. Pretty evil, huh?
While it’s great to have your name on a bunch of top commentators lists, you have to keep in mind that these links are more for SEO than traffic. Ask yourself what anchor text do you want to rank for and use that as your name. You’ll still get traffic, but your Google ranking will increase.

John Chow dot Com - PageRank 6
April 28th, 2007 by John Chow
Google started their PageRank update yesterday and it looks like this blog is jumping two spots - from PR4 to PR6! A check of 72 Google data centers shows John Chow dot Com at PR6 with 19 of them. Updates to the remaining data centers should be complete in the next few days.
The higher PageRank just made this blog a lot more valuable for me and a lot more expensive for advertisers. It will be interesting to see what Text Link Ads will price me at. It already cost $200 a month for a link on this blog. There is one link spot available at the current price. If you hurry, you may get it before TLA increases the price ($100 coupon here). I can also see competition heat up for the Top Commentators spot. Getting a site wide back link from a PR6 blog just for commenting will be worth the effort for many webmasters.
My ReviewMe price will be going to $400 next month. If you want a review at the current price of $300, make sure you get your order in before the end of this month. Speaking of reviews, blogs that reviewed my blog a long time ago might consider doing a new one. Your review will be linked like always, but this time it’ll be a PR6 link. :)
What is your new PageRank? Was Google good to you or did they slapped you? I imagine many sites will be applying to Text Link Ads in the next few days.

BabyTV.Com - First Internet TV Station for Parents
April 27th, 2007 by John Chow
As a parent of a newborn, I’m always on the look out for good parenting and baby information sites. Last week I noticed a Baby Videos link showed up under the Featured Sites section. The link went to a site call BabyTV.com. My first thought was, “Wow! This site is not a mom and pop operation.” Indeed, it is not. BabyTV.com is the latest website venture of publicly traded BabyUniverse, Inc. In addition purchasing a text link, BabyUniverse ordered up a ReveiwMe review for BabyTV.com. It must be nice to have a big advertising budget. :)
BabyTV.Com - The First Internet Television Station Dedicated to Parents
babytv.jpg
Launched in December 2006, BabyTV.com brings a rich user experience with high quality video content and interactive functionality for parents, parents-to-be, and caregivers. BabyTV.com offers an extensive catalog of streaming television programming targeted to new and expectant parents from recognized experts throughout the industry.
BabyTV.com is the first Internet-based television network dedicated to moms. BabyTV.com allows new and expectant parents to tune in to broadcast-quality streaming television, upload videos to share with the community, interact with live events, engage in e-commerce transactions, browse links on the web, and participate in BabyTV.com’s robust online community.
Viewers can tune into the 24/7 schedule featuring entertaining and informative videos from content partners Oxygen Media, Alpha Mom, The HealthCentral Network and Real Savvy Moms. In addition parents can share self-produced videos through the MyBabyTV section of the site. MyBabyTV offers an easy way to share opinions about BabyTV content by providing feedback on specific videos, participate in polls, and post original comments in video forums. Mostly, it’s a great place to post and view baby videos like this one.
BabyTV.com also offers a library of text-based articles written by industry experts that are available to users of the site. The articles are divided into four sections: Preconception, Pregnancy, Baby, and Parenting.
I wish BabyTV.com was around when Sarah and I were going through “our pregnancy.” I could have used a lot of its advice. However, the baby and parenting section is still very relevant for me. For such a new site, BabyTV.com offers an amazing amount of information. But you expect that from a website started by a multi-million dollar company.
First To Broadcast From The JPMA
BabyTV.com was the first site that was allowed to bring a Camera and broadcast from the JPMA (Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association) Live. In addition to live reporting from the show floor, BabyTV.com will also broadcast JPMA-sponsored events such as the Innovation Awards and New Product Showcase, as well as conducting product demonstrations with participating show exhibitors.
The BabyTV.com Business Model
BabyTV.com is a great example of a content based eCommerce site. While BabtTV.com does make money from advertising on the site and the TV show, its main purpose is to drive targeted traffic to BabyUniverse’s online stores. Through its websites BabyUniverse.com, Dreamtime Baby and Posh Tots, the company is a leading online retailer of over 30,000 brand-name baby products.
Being a content-based site, BabyTV.com has a much easier time being indexed by Google. This Search traffic can be easily monetized with advertising and joint promotions with the eCommerce stores. You can see an example of this with the BabyTV.com cash bonus program.
You can tell BabyUniverse, Inc. is putting a lot of money behind BabyTV.com. Buying a link and ReviewMe review from this blog is just tip of the promotional iceberg. Just imagine how much they paid for the BabyTV.com domain name! I wish them the best of luck. This will be an interesting site to keep an eye on from both a parent and Internet business model standpoint.

How To Hide Affiliate Links
April 27th, 2007 by John Chow
I wrote about hiding affiliate link for better SEO last month. However, the method I wrote about is just one of many ways to hide an affiliate link. I asked Justin from MyPCRig to share a few other ways to hide an affiliate link. This is what he came up with.
As John has mentioned more than a few times on this blog, people are more likely to click on a link if it doesn’t contain an affiliate code. To help you increase your affiliate signup rate, I’ve come up with a list of ways to hide an affiliate link. Keep in mind that there are many ways of doing this. I will be highlighting some of the popular techniques. As always, please read your affiliate program’s TOS and make sure this doesn’t go against it. Some programs have no problems with you hiding an affiliate link while other programs strictly forbid it.
.htaccess
This is a great file to get to know, if you’re using linux. .htaccess is located in the same folder as your index.html or index.php files. If not, you can create one.
Open it up .htaccess and move to the bottom of that file and type this in:
RewriteEngine on
RewriteRule ^john.php$ http://johnchow.com?ref=justin [R]
“RewriteEngine on” just turns on the mod rewrite program. As you see, url.com/john.php will be redirect to John’s website, plus it will contain your affiliate code. This is a very easy way to hide your affiliate code and you just need to edit one file.
HTML Redirect
Another easy way to do hide your code, that doesn’t require a certain OS. Create a file called john.htm and type this in.
Taking you to johnchow.com website http-equiv="refresh" content="0; url=http://johnchow.com?ref=justin">
Please stand by.
You just need to create a new HTML file for each of your affiliate program.
PHP Direct
If you have PHP install on your server, then you can use this technique. With
PHP there is a lot of different ways of doing this, but for the time being, I’ll
show you the super easy way.
Create an file called john.php and type this in:
header("Location: http://www.johnchow.com/?ref=justin");
?>
Save it and that’s it. Now url.com/john.php will now take you to johnchow.com/ref=Justin. As with the html way, you will need to upload a new file for each of your affiliates.
Javascript Redirect
This technique will work great on websites, however not in blogs with rss
feeds. Also if a reader turns off javascript, it will take the user to the url it’s
showing. Please note: Google bot has javascript turned off. If the user tries to
open it in a new browser or tab, it will not go to the hidden url.
Mypcrig
These are great ways to increase your affiliate conversions. They might be a
little evil, but it’s a great way to make money online.

BMW Designworks 787 - If I Were A Billionaire
April 27th, 2007 by John Chow
getasset-1.jpg
You have to hand it to those guys at BMW Designworks. They come up some of the coolest toys in the world. A separate entity from the car side of BMW, Designworks has had their hands in the design of tons of cool toys for boys; from cellphones to John Deere tractors (everyone needs one of those).
For their latest brain storming session, Designworks thought it would be cool to create a custom interior for the new Boeing 787 Dreamliner. BWM Designworks pictured the jet as a cross between a James Bond Villain and a super successful Gen-Xer. As you can see from the following photos, the interior is ultra modern and befitting the DesignWorks look. The bar has a glass floor so you can look down and see your car (a BMW of course). The theater uses a wall of the 787 for the screen.
The interior was created by Designworks to showcase their abilities at the upcoming Hamburg Aircraft Interior Expo. Nobody has actually ordered a Designworks 787 yet. However, I’m sure once a few well heeled billionaires get a look at the drawings, Designworks may get an order or two.

Publisher Spot - Taking The Ad Network List To New Heights
April 26th, 2007 by John Chow
Back before this blog became famous, I published a list of 130 advertising networks other than Google AdSense. The list was the work of a fellow tech site owner. The list was to be part of a new webmaster resource site that would feature discussions and ratings on the listed advertising companies. However, the site never came about because my friend never got around to doing it. I promise I would plug the site if he ever made it but since he didn’t, Tyler Cruz stepped in.
Publisher Spot - Professional Reviews Of Ad Networks
Being an Internet entrepreneur, and a fellow British Columbian, Tyler can recognize an opportunity when he sees one. A big list of ad networks is great, but a place to rate and discuss these networks is even better. So Tyler launched Publisher Spot, a site that offers professional reviews of ad networks. I know this concept will work because I am asked all the time what networks I run or recommend. This is why I created my make money page.
Publisher Spot is like a ResellerRating for ad networks. The site is publisher supported in the sense that publishers submit all reviews. After a review is posted, readers and other publishers can vote on it. The top 10 highest rated ad network are listed on the right sidebar. Reviews can be browsed by rating and date. You can also search for an ad network based on rating, category, ad creative, and features (like a referral program or PayPal payment).
Make Money With Publisher Spot
At the moment, Publisher Spot has a grand total of 10 reviews. Not a lot in light of the 130 ad network list. This is where you come in. Tyler needs webmasters to help him reviews all those remaining ad networks. And, he’ll pay you to do it.
I’m paying $50 if the review doesn’t need any editing, and $40 if it does. Write me 10 reviews, and that’s already $500. Adds up quick, doesn’t it? However, I’m only looking for top quality reviews; read some of the current ones on the site to see what I’m looking for.
Michael Kwan just wrote a post on making money online with someone else’s blog. Well, here’s a way to make money online with someone else’s site. If you belong to an ad network that hasn’t been reviewed yet, then why not ask Tyler if you can review it? If he accepts your offer, you’ll make money and help out a lot of fellow webmasters.
What does Tyler get out of this? Money of course. Most ad networks offer an affiliate program where they will pay you if you refer a new publisher to them. All the links on Publisher spot will carry Tyler’s affiliate link. Other than the affiliate links, Tyler tells me he will keep the site ad free (but you might see a “Featured Network” area in the future).
Publisher Spot is pretty much what I had in mind with my friend who made the list of ad networks. However, since he has fallen off the face of the earth, Tyler now has my support. I wish him the best of luck with it. I may even submit a few reviews.
Feedback Needed
Tyler would love to hear from you on how he can make Publisher Spot a better site. My first recommendation would be to make a review submission form. A comment system so other webmasters can comment on the network/review would also be nice. What do you think?

Make Money Online From Someone Else’s Blog
April 26th, 2007 by Michael Kwan
I know, I’m just as surprised as you are. Michael Kwan is putting up an entry on John Chow dot Com and it’s not a ReviewMe. Nope, this time around, I’m going to draw on my expertise as a professional freelance writer and tell you how you can make money online through blogging… but not on your own blog.
Make a Name for Yourself
When you’re first starting out as a blogger, it can be ridiculously difficult to make a name for yourself. There are millions of blogs out there, all trying to gain exposure, so what makes you think you’re so special? It’s good to have an optimistic outlook, but chances are that no one is going to care what you have to say. In the beginning, you’re going to be seen as no more important or interesting than anyone else. You can have the greatest content and the best insights, but if no one reads it, it’s kind of a moot point.
By contrast, if you blog for big-time sites like Gizmodo and Joystiq, the things that you are writing will be read, and they’ll be read by lots and lots of people. If it weren’t for Gizmodo, I would have never known about Adam Frucci or Brian Lam. By the same accord, if I didn’t write technology news for Mobile Magazine and do ReviewMe reviews for John Chow dot Com, there’s a very slim chance that anyone would ever stumble across my personal blog, Beyond the Rhetoric. BTR is still far from being my main source of income, but it’s received considerably more traffic after people found it through JC.
Writing for other blogs might sound a little like selling out on the dream of becoming a dot com mogul, because you are still trading hours for dollars, but it’s a stepping stone (and a very important one at that). It gets your name out there. It gives you an opportunity to be recognized for your writing ability. People learn that you are actually interesting to read, so they’ll feel more inclined to visit your blog.
Very few of us will ever achieve the same status as Darren Rowse or John Chow, but by blogging for others, you can elevate yourself well above the emo kids on MySpace. After I started writing for John Chow, for example, I’ve seen my Technorati ranking rise from well north of 100k to 21,543. A similar effect was experienced with my Alexa reach.
Bear in mind, though, that freelance writing is not the same as blogging. When you write for others (freelance writing), you have to adhere to their standards, their “tone”, and their preferred word count. (sounds like PayPerPost, huh?)
Where to Find Blogging Jobs
When you first start out, you might have to put up “guest entries” on someone else’s blog for free. Thankfully, I never had to do that. Remember, when you blog for others, it’s a job like any other and you should compose yourself accordingly. It’s more casual than working downtown, clearly, but you should still present yourself in a professional manner. I have a website where I highlight my previous work, for example.
How much you can expect to get paid will vary widely, depending on a number of factors. These include things like your professional writing experience, your expertise in that particular field, and how big the site is. It’s rumored that the writers for Gizmodo make over $7,500 a month, but most other (smaller) sites won’t offer nearly that much. My freelance rate for Mobile Magazine is much better than peanuts, but it’s not quite Engadget money either.
So, where can you find these gigs? When I started out, I went and poked around Craigslist for writing jobs and stumbled across a couple of opportunities. Later on, as I surfed my way around the blogosphere, I came across postings on sites that I visit anyways. I don’t write for them, but I know that Leftlane News is hiring freelance reviewers. If you’re interested in cars, that’s probably worth a shot. My other advice would be simply to email the managing editors of blogs that you enjoy reading. There’s no harm in asking.
There are plenty of professional blogs out there with very specific niches. If you’re persistent, you’ll surely find one that suits your interests… so long as you’re a good writer. :)

Here are the 10 reviews of batch 61.

Please stand by.
You just need to create a new HTML file for each of your affiliate program.
PHP Direct
If you have PHP install on your server, then you can use this technique. With
PHP there is a lot of different ways of doing this, but for the time being, I’ll
show you the super easy way.
Create an file called john.php and type this in:
header("Location: http://www.johnchow.com/?ref=justin");
